Lonzie Cox, Jr. – 8/5/10

Bush should have heeded Byrd on Iraq; Lonzie Cox, Jr.; Beaver County Times; August 5, 2010.  I am not related to Mr. Cox.

Most of Mr. Cox’s at least 56 letters since 2004 are tinged with race, and all take leftist positions.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“A friend reminded me that the late West Virginia Sen. Robert Byrd, after quitting his anti-civil rights activities, had gone on to do many good things for his state and the country.

“I agreed and added that every senator should do what Byrd did and bring home the bacon for his voters.”

[RWC] Just over two weeks ago Mr. Cox graced us with his letter entitled “Byrd can’t be forgiven racist past.”  Based on the apparent change of heart in this letter, it appears Mr. Cox’s fellow travelers (aka “A friend”) “took him to the woodshed” for bashing a fellow lefty for racism.  Then again, perhaps Mr. Cox had second thoughts on his own and decided to be honest.  That is, Mr. Cox can ignore the racism of political allies.  As I wrote in the previous critique, “Mr. Cox simply has double standards, one set for those who agree with his beliefs and another set for those who don’t.”

“Have our senators, Bob Casey or Arlen Specter, brought any projects home in recent memory?  We should know.”

[RWC] Mr. Cox has an interesting opinion on the purpose of our representatives.

“In researching Byrd’s career, I ran across the Senate speech he made in February 2003 when he just about begged President George W. Bush not to invade Iraq because:

“- Iraq was no threat to us.

“- The budget surplus Bush inherited would be wasted on destructive war instead of rebuilding America’s economy.”

[RWC] “Rebuilding America’s economy” from what?  Don’t lefties claim everything was peachy when Mr. Bush took office?  The budget surplus had already declined in Bill Clinton’s last budget.  The primary reasons for the deficits early in the Bush administration were the recession that started toward the end of the Clinton administration, 9/11 and its aftereffects, and the insecurity caused by the uncovering of accounting scandals that flourished during the Clinton administration.  Finally, when we entered Iraq we were already in our second fiscal year with a deficit so Iraq didn’t consume a surplus.

“- Once committed, the military would not know how to stop killing our soldiers and Iraqi civilians (Vietnam repeated).”

[RWC] Wow!  Mr. Cox appears to have a pretty low opinion of today’s U.S. military.

“- The rest of the world would think we were lunatics for invading a defenseless country.  Americans were supposed to be the peacemakers, the good guys, not invaders.

“Bush ignored everybody from the United Nations to Byrd to Pope John Paul II - and even the Dixie Chicks - in his rush to mindless war.”

[RWC] Blah, blah, blah.  The list of reasons for invading Iraq is contained in the Iraq War Resolution passed by Congress.
