Lonzie Cox, Jr. – 9/10/10

Altmire might lose his Democratic base; Lonzie Cox, Jr.; Beaver County Times; September 10, 2010.  I am not related to Mr. Cox.

Most of Mr. Cox’s at least 57 letters since 2004 are tinged with race, and all take leftist positions.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“I see my friend and congressman, Jason Altmire, is quite proud of his support from the National Rifle Association.

“One ad that aired briefly spoke of him ‘standing up’ to President Barack Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on issues such as health care and the stimulus.”

[RWC] What’s new?  Mr. Altmire never campaigned as a liberal/progressive, even against Melissa Hart in 2006 and 2008.  Mr. Altmire knows while his district is mostly Democrat, most of those rank-and-file Democrat voters are nowhere near as far to the left as Mr. Cox and his pals at Beaver County Reds.

“We sent Altmire to Congress to stand up against Bush, Boehner, McCain, Palin and the Teabaggers, not the speaker and the president.”

[RWC] Though I didn’t vote for Mr. Altmire, I thought we elected representatives to represent us, not “stand up against” anyone except enemies of the country.  Note Mr. Cox’s continued name-calling.  I’m beginning to think Mr. Cox is accusing others of his own behavior.

“It’s proven that when Democrats ignore their base voters by catering to right-wing suburbanites, they lose the young, Democratic voter.”

[RWC] Mr. Altmire’s ADA Liberal Quotients for 2007, 2008, and 2009 were 95%, 80%, and 70%, respectively.

It’s not about “catering to right-wing suburbanites.”  As noted above, PA-4 is mostly Democrat, but most of those rank-and-file Democrat voters are nowhere near as far to the left as Mr. Cox and his pals at Beaver County Reds.

As for the “young, Democratic voter” comment, even if it were true, does Mr. Cox not know older voters vote in greater numbers than younger voters?  Further, I don’t know about the 4th district as a whole, but John McCain (50.6%) won Beaver County in 2008, not Barack Obama (47.5%).

“I know their discontent.  I’m suggesting that Altmire get back to encouraging his Democratic base before it’s too late.  We don’t want another Melissa Hart fiasco, do we?”

[RWC] Mr. Altmire knows what Mr. Cox apparently doesn’t.  If Mr. Altmire were to vote and campaign exactly as Mr. Cox and his pals at Beaver County Reds want, Mr. Altmire wouldn’t have a chance.
