Memorial cost should be limited; Lonzie Cox, Jr.; Beaver County Times; May 27, 2012.  I am not related to Mr. Cox.

Most of Mr. Cox’s at least 75 letters since 2004 are tinged with race, and all take leftist positions.  The most recent previous Cox letter I critiqued was “Iran denial could be true.”

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Recently, The Times ran two stories on the same day that are loosely connected by one thing ... money.

“One story told of senior citizens, their experiences and day-to-day lives including job searches long after normal retirement.  The other story mentioned former presidents Bush and Clinton and their efforts to raise cash for the Flight 93 Memorial at Shanksville.  Seventy six million dollars is needed to complete the project.”

[RWC] To be clear, $76 million is one estimate for the total cost of the finished memorial, not additional funding.  According to an Associated Press article published by the BCT, “$8 million in private donations are still needed to finish the memorial located near Shanksville, about 75 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, along with $4 million in public funding.”

“The heroes of Flight 93 deserve all the honors for their actions on 9-11-2001.  My question is how much money should be spent on a memorial -- even one with a learning center out in the middle of nowhere?

“Two million dollars should be enough for a nice memorial.  The rest of the money could then be spent on senior citizen programs, sports equipment or musical instruments for students.  Two million dollars should build an appropriately respectful memorial we can be proud of.”

[RWC] Funds already spent on the Flight 93 National Memorial passed Mr. Cox’s $2 million a long time ago.  According to Minutes of the [February 4, 2012,] Meeting of the Flight 93 Advisory Commission, at least $23.2 million has already been spent.

As far as I can tell, funding is supposed to be a 50/50 split between public and private funds.  Does Mr. Cox propose to take private donations for the memorial and use them for stuff the donors never intended?
