Rebecca Deiter – 9/24/09

Vote shows Casey as man of character; Rebecca Deiter; Beaver County Times; September 24, 2009.

In the only previous letter from Ms. Deiter of which I’m aware, she claimed she was barraged by “negative untrue attacks about Barack Obama” via e-mail.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“ACORN is on my mind.

“While I have no ties to ACORN, I understand its mission and applaud its assistance to low-income families.  It performs invaluable work, especially for homeowners trying to keep their homes from foreclosure.

“Unethical acts of a few employees should not become the profile for ACORN or any organization.  Unfortunately, we tend to generalize based on the actions of a few … all politicians are crooks … people from California are tree-huggers … and so on.

“Recently, Congress voted to withdraw ACORN’s funding.  My opinion is that vote was politically motivated.

“If we use the same rationale in considering the recent corruption in Congress, why not revoke funding to corrupt legislators and the districts they represent?  From a scalable perspective, look at a local government (Rochester), local police force (Ambridge), state legislators (Ramaley and Veon) and make the argument that the organizations that employ them should be penalized for the actions of a few.

“U.S. Sen. Bob Casey voted against withdrawing ACORN’s funding, clearly in the minority and highly criticized.  To me, his vote shows that he is a man of character.

“I challenge people to understand the facts of this case and make their own decision but not paint this situation with a broad brush.  Be informed.  No excuses.”

[RWC] If Ms. Deiter understands “the facts of this case” herself, it’s surprising she would want others to know what she knows given her apparent view of ACORN.  For the rest of my comments, please read my critique of the Times editorial entitled “No excuses.”
