Below is a detailed critique of the letter.

“Please heed this call and the many others out there to bring the troops home now. The Gulf Coast, with its more-than-Pennsylvania-wide swath of intense destruction, should tell us we need the resources being spent and squandered in Iraq to be brought home now for urgent domestic tasks.

“Bring the National Guard home now, and more.”

[RWC] If Mr. Deutsch had taken the time, he would have learned about 75% of active duty and National Guard troops are assigned to the U.S. Only about 10% are in Iraq.

Since it’s a few days since he wrote this letter, Mr. Deutsch probably didn’t know military troops are already being withdrawn from the Katrina disaster area because they have completed their missions. Of course, I expect a significant military presence to remain for at least a few weeks.
