Clinton ‘stole’ gas tax; Paul Dici; Beaver County Times; January 16, 2006.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Although we are spending more money on highways and bridges than ever before, we could be spending more if the money wasn’t ‘stolen’ by the Clinton Administration.

“One of the first things Clinton did in office, even before chasing interns and lying to grand juries, was to pass a 5-cent raise in the gas tax.  He then mandated that the billions raised by that tax be put into the general fund instead of the highway fund, the first time this was even done.

“This was to make it look like his policies were responsible for lowering the deficit, and not the billions that should have gone to the highway fund.

“This was and is public knowledge, but I guess the truth doesn’t fit into some people’s agenda.”

[RWC] People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw rocks.  I’m certainly no Clinton fan, but Mr. Dici is deluding himself if he believes Republicans are not guilty of the same behavior.  Though there are individual exceptions, elected Republicans as a group are nearly the spendthrifts Democrats are.  They run on conservative principles then govern not much different from Democrats when it comes to big government and spending.
