Let citizen committee design voting districts; Michele Donner (MD); Beaver County Times; April 11, 2017.
Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.
“The primary to chose [sic] judges for the November election is May 16. So many registered voters stay home because they believe their vote doesn’t matter; that the system is rigged by complicated nominating rules, by ‘super delegates’ and by gerrymandering.
“Grassroots groups like Fair Districts PA want to end gerrymandering by supporting a process to have a citizen committee design our voting districts, rather than the party in power, which is the case now.”
[RWC] Just what we need, another layer of government. Anyone who believes politics can be removed from redistricting is mistaken.
That’s even true for a computer app that could define “logical” districts honoring county and municipal boundaries as much as possible.
“State Senate Bill 22, which proposes an amendment to the state constitution to establish an independent commission made up of non-politicians, has not yet been supported by our area senators, Camera Bartolotta and Elder Vogel Jr. Please take a moment to look over FairDistrictsPA.com to learn more, then share your views with your senator.”
[RWC] There must be exceptions, but it appears most of the endorsing organizations are leftist groups.
