Stevan Drobac, Jr. – 10/21/07

Democrats to pay for failures; Steve Drobac; Beaver County Times; October 21, 2007.

As a reminder, Mr. Drobac was the Democrat nominee in the 4th Congressional District in 2002 and 2004 and ran against Rep. Melissa Hart both years.  If you’re familiar with Mr. Drobac, you know the only people he bashes more than Republicans are Democrats that are not as liberal as he.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Congress passed legislation guaranteeing full medical coverage to all elected legislators and their family members, a benefit paid by taxpayers who never was [sic] given the opportunity to vote and approve the issue.”

[RWC] Does Mr. Drobac know how a representative republic works?  The Constitution provides no mechanism for voters to vote for anything other than representatives, senators, and the president.

“Any representative or senator who failed to participate in overriding the veto Bush imposed on the SCHIP program must be voted out of office and classified as an accomplice to killing a child, knowing they have/had the power to prevent such tragedy.”

[RWC] “[K]illing a child?”  If you’re familiar with Mr. Drobac’s body of work, you’ll remember he’s big into hyperbole.  Below is what I wrote in a comment I posted on the Times website in response to a similar letter.  It also applies to Mr. Drobac.

“Why does Ms. Delanko apparently believe its OK for parents to dump their childrearing responsibilities on their neighbors?

“I’m sure it was an honest oversight, but Ms. Delanko neglected to mention President Bush is fine with reauthorizing the current SCHIP program.  The current program helps with healthcare for children of the poor not poor enough (up to 200% of the federal poverty level and allows states not to count certain income) to qualify for Medicaid.  Incredibly, SCHIP also covers some parents.  What Mr. Bush opposes is expanding the program beyond the poor and increasing the max age for covered children beyond the current 18.  The current House version would triple federal SCHIP spending to $15 billion/year and the Senate version would increase it to 2.4 times the current level.

“At one point the proposal included families of four making more than $80,000/year and increased the max age for covered children to 25.  Make no mistake about it; the proposed SCHIP expansion has nothing to do with “the children” as proponents would have us believe.  It’s all about gradually implementing a taxpayer-funded, government-run healthcare system for the U.S.

“While I believe President Bush should veto the SCHIP expansion, I’m disappointed in him – and all elected Republicans – for not letting the SCHIP program expire on schedule.

“Do I believe people who need help because of unforeseen circumstances should get it?  Of course, but via private charities funded by voluntary contributions.”

“Democrats need to stop running their mouth with false promises.  Bush hit the nail on the head on Wednesday in his news conference, saying on national TV how the Democrats have been in power for nine months and have done absolutely nothing on their verbal promises made in the last election and during the past several months.”

[RWC] It must have killed Mr. Drobac to admit President Bush was right about anything!

“The Democrats failed to begin the impeachment process on Bush, failed to correct our involvement in Iraq, failed to correct the illegal immigrant problem and failed to act on several other important issues.”

[RWC] You’ll note Mr. Drobac didn’t tell us the criminal charges he would use to impeach President Bush.

“Failure to come out publicly with answers to solving these problems with written legislation instead of verbal garbage highly indicates they are afraid to challenge these issues as promised.

“As a former Democratic candidate for Congress against former U.S. Rep. Melissa Hart, I have been extremely busy with e-mails and telephone calls from Democratic voters who have vowed to vote for the Republican candidate in 2008.”

[RWC] Yeah, sure.

“Their reason: Elected Democrats refuse to honor promises made to win.”

[RWC] This would be a nice story, except Democrats didn’t make any promises.  They simply bashed Republicans and then interpreted the election results as they saw fit.

Is Mr. Drobac implying he intends to run against Jason Altmire in 2008?
