Hey, kids, help stop global warming; Sarah Duplaga; Beaver County Times; January 14, 2007.

In a recent letter to the editor, I wrote, “I become skeptical when people try to sell their manmade global warming position using emotion and hysteria.”  This is the third letter since then proving my point.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“I’m writing this to the kids of Beaver County.

“Did you know that the coral reef is the most sensitive ecosystem to global warming?

“One thing that will make the coral reef disappear is climate change.  This will affect fisheries, tourism, shore protection, and marine biodiversity, and this will affect over 100 countries.

“This will be a huge disaster.  Many of the coral reefs have almost lost all of their coral, and a temperature rise in most places gives only a couple of years till all the coral dies of heatstroke.

“At the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, a global satellite showed the sea-surface data and indicated that we might lose all of our coral in the next 10 years.”

[RWC] Here’s hysteria.  In 1992, these guys allegedly said “we might lose all of our coral in the next 10 years.”  If that assessment had been true, all of our coral should have been gone five years ago.

Other examples of hysteria were claims we’d be unable to feed the world’s population before 2000, the oceans would be dead by 2000, and we’d be in a mini “ice age” by 2000.

“How to stop global warming: Stop pollution, and stop using coal in factories.”

[RWC] “[S]top using coal in factories?”  Who uses coal in factories?  To the best of my knowledge, the vast majority of coal consumed in the U.S. is in electric power plants.

As a reminder, 30 years ago the same people now telling us pollution causes global warming told us pollution causes global cooling.

What if man’s contribution – if any – to global warming is negligible?  As I’ve noted before, the Earth has gone through warming and cooling cycles of varying degree and duration since its creation.

“Kids, nag your parents to call their legislators, senators, or anyone who will help stop global warming.”

[RWC] “[N]ag your parents?”  Is Ms. Duplaga serious?  It’s stuff like this from manmade global warming believers that makes me skeptical of significant manmade global warming.
