Oppose national sales tax; Fran Edwards; Beaver County Times; August 28, 2005.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Congress is looking to pass the buck from income taxpayers to those who can ill-afford to pay for it by implementing a national sales tax.”

[RWC] Edwards admits a bunch of citizens are currently getting off the hook because they don’t pay their share of taxes.  For tax year 2002, the top 25% of earners paid 66% of the total federal income tax collected.  The bottom 50% paid only 3.5%!  In other words, this group paid only 7% (1/14th) of its fair share.

“If it’s not broke, don’t try to fix it.  Contact Rep. U.S. Rep. Hart and tell her you oppose a national sales tax.  It’s a shifty tax; it’s unfair.”

[RWC] I believe you’re mistaken if you don’t believe the current income tax system is broken.  I suspect Edwards believes the only “fair” tax is one he/she doesn’t pay.
