Go after real crimes; Karen Ferrick-Roman; Beaver County Times; September 9, 2007.

Though mentioned nowhere in the letter, Ms. Ferrick-Roman is a former Times staff writer.  According to the Duquesne University website, Ms. Ferrick-Roman is currently Assistant Director for Media Relations & Campus News.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“The world must be a much safer place because of U.S. Sen. Larry Craig’s bust in the bathroom.

“True, we’re protected from one more instance of galling hypocrisy from a politician.”

[RWC] Note Ms. Ferrick-Roman didn’t tell us what made Mr. Craig’s alleged actions hypocritical.

“But are our police forces so massive and our streets so safe that we can afford to station undercover cops in airport bathrooms for this type of bust?

“Forget about child abuse, domestic abuse, turf wars and outright homicide.  We’ve got the bathroom patrol to keep us safe.”

[RWC] This observation is true for many crimes.  For example, should we continue to dedicate resources to curb shoplifting, overtime parking, expired vehicle registration, etc. and “Forget about child abuse, domestic abuse, turf wars and outright homicide?”

I wonder if Ms. Ferrick-Roman has a list of crimes we should ignore until we’ve eliminated “child abuse, domestic abuse, turf wars and outright homicide.”

Note:  Please don’t interpret anything I wrote above to be taking a position regarding the Craig case.  From what I’ve heard/read, I have no way to take an informed position.
