Thomas M. Finch – 7/18/10

Anti-Obama letter was off the charts; Thomas M. Finch; Beaver County Times; July 18, 2010.

Mr. Finch’s letters never disappoint.  As usual, his letter is little more than a string of leftist talking points.  It’s at least the 25th anti-Bush and/or anti-Republican letter from Mr. Finch since December 2004.  Here is one example.  I wish he could get a regular column in the Times.  I also wish he could get at least five minutes per day on a local radio and/or TV station.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“I only have three things to say about Dan Reeping’s insulting letter to the editor Thursday (‘Many Obama voters were stupid’).”

[RWC] This is at least the fourth time since 2005 Mr. Finch has written a letter responding to a Reeping letter.  Previous examples are here, here, and here.  What we have is a duel of knucklehead letters.

“• No president was ever more unqualified or incompetent - or a bigger liar - than his hero, George W. Bush; but Reeping voted for him twice - and then has the nerve to call those who voted for Obama stupid?

“• All of the out-of-context ‘facts’ trashing President Barack Obama are just a continuing regurgitation from the Republican, neo-con, smear machine.  I’m surprised he didn’t throw in the ‘he’s not an American citizen’ again - they love that one.  Who needs truth when you can have sensationalism?”

[RWC] Without defending the presentation in Mr. Reeping’s letter, the facts cited don’t appear to be out of context.  Given Mr. Finch’s history of fact problems (An example is further down.), I get a kick out of him complaining about another person’s facts.

That said, the “over 56 states” comment was pretty cheap.  Yes, during the 2008 campaign Mr. Obama said, “… it is just wonderful to be back in Oregon, and over the last 15 months we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States.  I’ve now been in fifty .... seven states?  I think one left to go.  One left to go.  Alaska and Hawaii, I was not allowed to go to even though I really wanted to visit but my staff would not justify it.”  I think it’s fair to say Mr. Obama simply had a brain or mouth misfire, as we all have from time to time.

As I’ve written before, Mr. Finch likes to use the term “neo-con,” but he never tells us what his definition is.  I suspect Mr. Finch just heard it somewhere and likes the sound.

“• Anyone who would profess - in a public forum yet - that talk radio and Faux News are the only presenters of ‘true facts’ in the media only bears witness to the fact of his own gullibility, lack of reason and delusional thinking.”

[RWC] Mr. Reeping did not claim “talk radio and [Fox] News are the only presenters of ‘true facts’ in the media.”

“Obama’s not perfect, but he’ll do more for the common good than any neo-con Republican will.”

[RWC] Blah, blah, blah.  Mr. Obama has been in office for 18 months; when will he start “do[ing] more for the common good?”
