Rich man, poor man; Vivienne R. Finch; Beaver County Times; July 11, 2005.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“I saw President Bush and his wife on television all dressed up and being entertained in style at a July 4 celebration.  He looked smug and arrogant.  Laura continues to act clueless.  I thought about his daughters enjoying the holiday with friends in the same luxurious manner.”

[RWC] You can tell an author can’t make a logical case when her letter leads off with name-calling.

“I think about my Marines Corps nephew trapped in Iraq and wonder what his Fourth of July entertainment was.  His wife had a baby daughter last week.  She is their first child.  He hasn’t seen his wife since February.  I appreciate her strength and courage.  He has not held his precious daughter.  He may get to see them mid July.  I think how wrong and unfair this is.”

[RWC] All wars are unfair and I wish Ms. Finch’s nephew didn’t need to be in Iraq.

“He has never complained.”

[RWC] I wonder if Ms. Finch ever considered that her nephew might not share her beliefs about the war and that’s why “he has never complained.”

“I worry about what will happen to my nephew in Iraq.  I see his mother’s anger and frustration.  I think about how similar this scenario is to what the Iraqi people have been living under for many, many years - how the rich and powerful push everyone else around because they can.”

[RWC] In case you missed it, Ms. Finch just compared President Bush to Saddam Hussein.  What are these people thinking about when they make such comparisons?

I guess it escapes Ms. Finch that her nephew serves because he wants to, not because he was forced.  He not only volunteered, he volunteered for one of the tougher assignments in the military.

“I wonder how the other aunts, uncles, moms, and dads of our soldiers who have been killed and injured and are at constant risk feel.  I wonder why George W. Bush is still president.  I’m sick of his lies.  I wonder how he, his supporters and other bullies who start wars can sleep at night.”

[RWC] Once again, when will these folks start documenting the alleged lies?

At least Ms. Finch didn’t tell us she “supports the troops.”
