Politicians to blame; Paul N. Frey; Beaver County Times; February 1, 2013.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“When Social Security was first started, it was intended to augment people’s income in retirement for those who paid into the program.  People who by and large expected to provide the bulk of their retirement incomes themselves.”

[RWC] Here’s a paper I wrote about Socialist Security and Medicare.

While the stated intent of SS was as Mr. Frey wrote, the true intent was political.

“The government has a responsibility toward its citizens, and safeguarding Social Security should have been a top priority.  For years, we have heard of the impending Social Security crisis.  The dreaded baby boomers are coming.  If the government knew this crisis was coming, then why did they not take action to avert a crisis?”

[RWC] As described in the aforementioned paper, the feds began trying to fix the SS financial problems at least as far back as 1950.

“For years the government has raided Social Security in order to fund a variety of social programs for politicians to garner votes.  These funds were drawn at the expense of solvency of Social Security.

“Shortly after World War II, the government knew the baby boomers were coming, and they were aware of the impact they would have on the Social Security system.  The government has had almost 50 years to address this issue.  For years we have heard the blame game, political posturing and kick the can down the road.  Our political leaders chose to bury their heads in the sand and pretend the problem would go away.

“Now that the baby boomers are retiring, the government is wringing its hands about the impending doom.  Their solution now is to make changes to the entitlement program, move the retirement age to 67 or even 70, change benefits, increase costs, increase the percentage we pay and increase the amount we pay on.

“They are punishing the recipients of Social Security.  We the citizens, both young and not so young, are the victims of our politicians’ negligence.”

[RWC] Who elected the politicians?
