Call to suspend fuel taxes; Jason Gabauer; Beaver County Times; September 11, 2005.

Below is a detailed critique of the letter.

“With fuel prices continuing to rise, it’s time for our local legislators to step up to the plate and offer relief in the form of a suspension of fuel taxes.  Our legislators have shown that they are not afraid to take our money for their own advantage, so now it’s time for them to give back.

“As the effects of Hurricane Katrina have caused gasoline prices to rise to $3 per gallon and beyond, a suspension of the fuel taxes would be welcome relief for the citizens of not only Beaver County but the whole state.

“Hopefully, our legislators will do the right thing for Pennsylvanians, not just what is right for themselves.”

[RWC] Mr. Gabauer may have good intentions, but he needs to retake high school economics.  The last thing you do when supply of a product is limited is to reduce its price.  When supply is tight, you want people to conserve and high prices do that.

I’m not a friend of taxes, but reducing taxes during a perceived shortage is the wrong time.  I’ll be all for a tax cut once the supply/demand gets back to “normal.”
