‘Good can come out of this’; Lynn Coleman Gardner; Beaver County Times; September 19, 2005.

Below is a detailed critique of the letter.

“I just can’t sit still and closed mouth another day longer regarding the Katrina Hurricane disaster.  It would be impossible to try and put everything in this letter; however; there are some things that are uppermost in my mind.

“First: It was a known fact five days prior to the event that the hurricane was going to hit.  What was done?  Practically nothing, which I can’t even begin to understand.”

[RWC] Not really.  A lot of resources were pre-positioned.  The big shortcoming was not in getting everyone evacuated from New Orleans.  The city had a plan, but the mayor didn’t execute it.

“Second: As far as President Bush goes, he has just been a no account.  Like some people have said, let him spend just one night there and see how it feels.  He certainly didn’t extend a helping hand to help and secure the homeless, hungry, sick, etc.  If this had been a white affluent area, things would have been altogether different.”

[RWC] Ms. Gardner has a history of Bush-bashing letters, in case you didn’t guess.  She has no idea of what was going on at the federal level.

Regarding the “white affluent area” comment, Ms. Gardner apparently doesn’t know “white affluent areas” were flooded and destroyed.

“Third: There’s absolutely no doubt in my mind the black race wasn’t the lone issue.  Race, age and economics were involved.  Poor white people had their share of problems as well.  God loves us all.”

[RWC] “Black race wasn’t the lone issue?”  We have another race baiter.

“Fourth: The blame finger is being pointed in every possible direction.  It’s a little late for that now.  It’s a situation that has occurred; it’s time to move on with concrete solutions.”

[RWC] Apparently Ms. Gardner has noticed most fingers have turned from pointing at the feds to the local and state governments, and Democrats have run these governments “forever.”  Even worse for the race argument, every New Orleans mayor since the late 1990s has been black.

“Fifth: I’ve turned my views and thoughts over to God, our creator, and believe in my heart that in spite of the fact thousands of lives were lost there have been a lot of survivors.  And let’s not forget all the volunteers.  Good can come out of this.  God answers prayer!

“Finally, I can’t see rebuilding New Orleans because there’s a chance another hurricane could hit in the future.  It’s time to move on!”

[RWC] “It’s time to move on!”  Wasn’t that the rallying cry of the libs during the Clinton/Lewinsky affair?
