Romney not Bush; Rita Gavert; Beaver County Times; October 31, 2012.

The BCT published at least 36 letters from Ms. Gavert since mid-2005.  The only previous Gavert letter I critiqued was “Why did we lend Brazil $3 billion?”

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Mitt Romney is not George Bush even though they both are Republicans.  I don’t think he can make the economy worse than Obama has or get us deeper in debt.”

[RWC] It’s a shame Ms. Gavert feels the need to “throw Mr. Bush under the bus” to support Mr. Romney.  To do so implies Mr. Bush is to blame for starting the economic mess we’re in.  In her letter-writing body of work, Ms. Gavert generally supported Mr. Bush.  As far back as 2004 I referred to Mr. Bush as a Rockefeller Republican.  That said, the economic mess we’re in was the result of leftist policies, policies the Bush administration began to warn us about in 2001.  At the time the subprime lending mess happened, the deficit had been shrinking and was “only” about $160 billion.

Also, I never found the “Bob isn’t Joe” approach to be a strong recommendation.

“Obama’s health care bill is going to cost a fortune, and even doctors don’t like all the ramifications of it.  As for the references to Romney as a ‘rich, spoiled rotten kid,’ that is totally offensive.  I know he’s wealth [sic], but when did that become an evil, despicable thing?  He’s shared his time, money and talents, done missionary work and supported many charities.  So, let’s not be so judgmental about his character.”

[RWC] It’s too bad Ms. Gavert didn’t limit her letter to this paragraph.
