Youth must get involved; Rebecca Marcelina Gimeno; Beaver County Times; November 6, 2006.

Rather than do a point-by-point critique of the letter, I’ll address only the final three paragraphs of the letter.

Ms. Gimeno wrote, “I was introduced to Peace Links by a friend of mine.  This experience not only gave me the tools needed to be active but had me interact with a diverse group of cross-cultural people, ranging in age, religion, political affiliation and strengths.

“By participating in this local group, I was able to network with other groups and acquire advice and support for my own political campaigns.  We also took part in a major march last September in Washington, D.C. and held an annual vigil during Garrison Days in Beaver.

“I urge everyone and anyone to get involved.  But above all, I’m pushing for the local youth to join.  This group takes part in numerous activities, ranging from backing choice candidates to fighting for universal peace and integrity.  We are the future and the future is ours.”

Beaver County Peace Links is an arm of the Beaver County Coalition for Social Justice.  These are the guys you see in front of the Beaver County courthouse on Saturday holding anti-Bush signs and waving at people driving by.  I attended a couple of their rallies in 2004 and 2005 and the speakers are one socialist – that’s a kind description – after another telling us why just about everything the U.S. stands for is wrong.  “Peace” is only a cover for this group.  Check out the links on the Peace Links website and you’ll see what I mean.

I suspect this is why Ms. Gimeno’s letter didn’t provide details about the “major march” and “numerous activities.”  In the past, International ANSWER, an arm of the Marxist (the group’s own description) Workers World Party, organized the marches Peace Links attended in Washington, DC.  It’s not a coincidence ANSWER was formed only three days after the 9/11 attacks.

Other locals involved with these organizations include Randy Shannon, Peter Deutsch, and Lonzie Cox.  I suspect it’s fair to assume quite a few of the more prolific and vitriolic letter-to-the-editor authors are also associated with Peace Links.

Here’s my last point.  As noted above, Ms. Gimeno wrote, “This experience … had me interact with a diverse group of cross-cultural people, ranging in age, religion, political affiliation and strengths.”  Given my personal interactions with people affiliated with Peace Links, I suspect the interaction Ms. Gimeno had with people of opposing “political affiliation” was to try and shout them down or launch a name-calling attack.
