Racism still thrives in the United States; Jesse Green, Jr.; Beaver County Times; September 24, 2009.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Let’s face the facts, America.  Our first African-American president has been received with less than open arms.”

[RWC] I guess it must have been racism when President Bush was “received with less than open arms.”

“He has been branded a Nazi, communist, terrorist, Muslim: everything short of the Anti-Christ.”

[RWC] I guess it must have been racism when people called President Bush the same things, with the exception of “communist” and “Muslim” but including “the Anti-Christ.”

“After inheriting the mess George W. Bush left our country in, he is making progress in turning our country around.  The economy is rebounding, auto and steel workers are being recalled and Wall Street is seeing some of its best days.”

[RWC] In which alternative reality does Mr. Green live?  Apparently Mr. Green doesn’t know or conveniently forgot President Obama supported/supports the subprime lending policies at the root of our current mess.

“Republican U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina, a state where the Confederate flag sits high above, called our president a liar.  Bush lied to America for eight years and got thousands of Americans killed in two senseless wars he created.”

[RWC] I guess it must have been racism when members of Congress called President Bush a liar on the floors of the House and Senate.  Mr. Green claims Mr. “Bush lied to America for eight years” but doesn’t describe the lies.  Mr. Wilson explicitly detailed what Mr. Obama allegedly lied about.

As for the “two senseless wars [Mr. Bush] created,” I thought we attacked Afghanistan because that’s where the guys who attacked us on 9/11 were headquartered.  Also, since 2003 hasn’t the left told us Afghanistan was the “good” war?

“From the vicious and unfounded rumors of death panels and the vile poison being spewed every time Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, etc., open their mouths, to the blatant attacks on ACORN, our president is being attacked and his good name smeared at every hand.”

[RWC] I guess it must have been racism when President Bush was “being attacked and his good name smeared at every hand.”  I don’t recall Mr. Green complaining.

“Face it, America.  Racism is alive and thriving.”

[RWC] Seriously, though, when people can’t or don’t want to address the issues, they attempt to demonize their opponents as Mr. Green did here.  I don’t recall a letter from Mr. Green when people threw Oreo cookies at Michael Steele when he ran for governor of Maryland.

Folks like Mr. Green are telling us we can’t oppose a non-white’s (and probably a female’s) policies without being charged with racism, sexism, et cetera.  Using Mr. Green’s logic, everyone who didn’t vote for Mr. Obama is a racist.  I wonder if Mr. Green believes everyone who didn’t vote for Lynn Swann for governor was a racist.
