Pray for our republic; Bradley Guinn; Beaver County Times; September 14, 2004.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“In 1787, when asked what form of government had been created, Ben Franklin replied, ‘A republic, if you can keep it.’

“I pray that we can keep our republic and prudently plan for our posterity.

“The Republican spin meisters have been planning this campaign for a long time.  Consider the following:

·        “The California energy crisis engineered by Enron (Kenneth Lay) resulted in the election of Arnold Schwarzenegger as governor.  California has 54 electoral votes.”

[RWC] Oh my gosh, is Mr. Guinn a conspiracy nut?  Are we to believe evil Republicans convinced the heavily Democrat California legislature over the decades to pass laws that made it nearly impossible to build power plants all in a conspiracy to get the heavily Democrat state to kick out a Democrat governor and replace him with a Republican immigrant, all in an effort to help reelect President Bush?  Is Mr. Guinn serious?

There’s little doubt Enron – as well as other energy suppliers – tried to take advantage of California’s energy problem, but these companies didn’t make the problem.  That honor goes to California legislators who wanted energy but who didn’t want power plants in California.  We also can’t forget California had implemented price controls on energy.

By the way, Mr. Guinn, the Democrat governor, Gray Davis, was reelected in 2002 long after the 2000 California energy crisis.  What got Gray Davis canned was that he misled voters about California’s financial status and his tax increase plans during his campaign.

·         “Bush is campaigning as a wartime president.  This means not changing horses in midstream or criticizing him.  When Bush and his vice president had the opportunity to serve their country, they dodged the issue.  Enough said?”

[RWC] President Bush isn’t just campaigning as a wartime president; he is a wartime president.  Mr. Guinn, you don’t know how many servicemen and servicewomen in the National Guard and Reserves you piss off when you claim Guard service is not serving.

In addition to praying for our republic, we should pray for Mr. Guinn.
