Blame curriculum cut on feds; Karen Guman; Beaver County Times; July 6, 2005.

An editor note states, “The writer is payroll and benefits coordinator for the Hopewell Area School District.”

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“I am writing in response to Cheryl Kozel’s letter (‘Don’t cut vital curriculum,’ June 26) regarding the cutting of the Title I reading program at Hopewell Elementary School.

“The Title I reading program is funded by the federal government and not by school tax dollars.  The federal government is who determined that Hopewell Elementary School no longer qualified for federal money to fund this program.  Its guidelines indicated that the program was not needed in that school any longer, and the funds for this program were eliminated by the federal government.

“Perhaps she and all the other parents who feel this program is needed should write to their representative and senators and even the president to ask that the guidelines for this program be expanded and Hopewell Elementary be reinstated as an at-need school.

“More people should get their facts straight before jumping to the conclusion that the school boards are cutting all the programs.  Put the blame for the elimination of the Title I program where it belongs - the federal government.”

[RWC] Can Ms. Guman show us where the U.S. Constitution gives the federal government responsibility for funding education?  The truth is the feds should stop all federal taxpayer funding of education.
