G-20 could lead to better world; Amanda Hiler; Beaver County Times; October 11, 2009.  An editor’s note asserts, “The writer is a ninth-grade student at Riverside High School.”

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“The Group of 20, known as G-20, is very important for the world.  G-20 discusses key issues in the global economy and promotes open discussion between the nations’ great leaders.  They will save our planet from pollution with green jobs and improve our economic problems.  I believe G-20 is necessary because we need the help to become more successful.

“I do not understand why it is a big problem for people around the world to come over to the United States for a couple of days.  They are not disrupting life in the city too badly or for too long.  Having the meeting in Pittsburgh to me is very exciting and interesting.  It should be a great honor to have the nations’ great leaders so close to home, and yet I see adults mocking the heritage of some countries.

“I was ashamed to see adults doing that, especially adults who are supposed to be showing a good example for children.  G-20 also discusses key issues about the global economy.  They promote green jobs, which help the environment and gives unemployed people jobs.  We could be killing two birds with one stone because of G-20 helping the environment and giving people jobs.

“G-20 could even create alliances between us and some other countries because of the discussions that are made.  G-20 is important for our future, and I wish everyone could see that.  Hopefully, by reading positive points, people will start to change their mind about G-20.”

[RWC] I wonder where Miss Hiler got the information that led her to the opinions she expressed.

Did you note what’s missing?  The letter doesn’t present a single example of the G-20 doing anything that would support Miss Hiler’s opinions.
