That was no cheap shot; Scott Hill; Beaver County Times; October 22, 2004.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“In regard to the Wednesday’s letter to the editor ‘Kerry’s cheap shot’:

“I wonder if writer Jerry Robbins was really listening to John Kerry’s remarks in the third debate concerning Mary Cheney.

“In the third debate, Kerry was asked if he considered homosexuality a ‘choice.’  His response was:

“‘We’re all God’s children, and I think if you were to talk to Dick Cheney’s daughter, who is a lesbian, she would tell you that she’s being who she was.  She’s being who she was born as.  I think if you talk to anybody, it’s not a choice.’

“That hardly sounds like an ‘attack’ to me.  But, then, some people consider the term ‘lesbian’ or ‘gay’ to always be shameful in any context.  I do not.”

[RWC] Mr. Hill must believe we are morons.  Kerry’s comment was not an attack on Mary Cheney, but it was an attack on VP Cheney.  The liberal mind believes conservatives hate homosexuals and would not vote for someone with a homosexual child.  Kerry’s comment was intended to act on liberals’ bigoted view of conservatives.

Why do I say that?  Consider these points.

·        Equally out of nowhere, John Edwards brought up Mary Cheney’s sexual preference during the VP debate.

·        Was Mary Cheney the only homosexual John Kerry knew about?  John Kerry never met and doesn’t know Mary Cheney.  U.S. Rep. Barney Frank represents the 4th Congressional District of Massachusetts, is a Democrat, and is openly homosexual.  If Kerry wanted to make a point, why not use Frank, whom Kerry knows well?

·        When asked about the comment, Kerry campaign adviser Mary Beth Cahill said, “She [Mary Cheney] is someone who’s a major figure in the campaign.  I think that it’s fair game, and I think she’s been treated very respectfully.”  “Fair game?”

Consider the uproar if the question had been about obesity being a choice and President Bush had responded, “We’re all God’s children, and I think if you were to talk to John Edward’s wife, who is overweight, she would tell you that she’s being who she was.  She’s being who she was born as.  I think if you talk to anybody, it’s not a choice.”

Both Kerry and Edwards claimed they were trying to pay VP Cheney’s family a compliment.  The campaign that makes the vilest personal attacks on President Bush and VP Cheney wants us to believe they were trying to pay Cheney’s family a compliment?  If you believe that I have a bridge to sell you.

I believe the Kerry and Edwards comments told us far more about liberal values than about conservatives.
