Give up the pork; Jack Hinkley; Beaver County Times; April 25, 2008.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“It seems to me that Republican presidential candidate John McCain has a great idea for immediately providing at least some temporary, partial relief from high gasoline prices when he suggested that all federal gasoline taxes be cancelled between Memorial Day and Labor day [sic].”

[RWC] Nope, Mr. McCain’s proposal was nothing but pandering intended to help him win election.  Artificially lowering (or increasing) prices is exactly the wrong thing to do.

“Of course, a tax shortfall for the period was immediately brought up.

“I think the shortfall could easily be met by having members of Congress, who we elected and sent there to represent us, give up some or all of their pork projects money to cover that period of time.

“By doing so, these representatives of the people would be helping more people than giving their money to special projects, many of which are more than ridiculous at best.”

[RWC] This should always be the case.
