Hard righters can’t call themselves centrists; Mark S. Hogan; Beaver County Times; April 29, 2009.

Below is a detailed critique of the letter.

“I’m seeing more and more hard righters speak as if they are the centrists and everyone else is to the far left politically.”

[RWC] At no point does Mr. Hogan provide us with his definition of “hard righters,” “centrists,” or “far left.”

“If you can’t see anyone to the right of you, you can’t be in the center.  The left wing they speak of is really most Americans, and this includes moderates and liberals all along the political spectrum.”

[RWC] Centrists/moderates are simply lefties who don’t want to admit they’re lefties.

“And it’s true many don’t want much government intrusion into a woman’s reproductive rights or interference with all people’s rights of being legally married.”

[RWC] Is Mr. Hogan describing what he believes to be “hard right?”  That is, if you believe it’s wrong to kill an unborn baby and a marriage is between a man and a woman (regardless of sexual orientation), you’re “hard right?”  That’s interesting because a majority of Americans support these positions.

“I’m fine with the disagreement, I just wanted to point out they aren’t standing where they think they are.”

[RWC] Translation: Mr. Hogan wants to call himself a centrist/moderate, so that means anyone to his right must be a “hard righter.”
