Fox misrepresents what its format is; Charlotte Hovanec; Beaver County Times; May 11, 2010.

A previous letter from Ms. Hovanec was entitled “End political blathering.”

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“We recently received a notice of a class-action lawsuit that we are part of.

“The product in question had not been recalled for operational or safety reasons.  The manufacturers had misrepresented its capabilities; thus, the lawsuit.

“I couldn’t help but think about fair and balanced Fox News.  There is nothing wrong with being a voice for Republicans/conservatives, but don’t misrepresent to the public what your format is.”

[RWC] I get a kick out of how much lefties seem to obsess over FNC.

Ms. Hovanec appears to ignore the fact FNC has both news and opinion shows, just like every one of its competitors including the print media.  Has Ms. Hovanec missed that the Times own J.D. Prose is both a political “reporter” and a political pundit?

“How many times have Hannity, O’Reilly, Beck, etc., been called on the carpet for their lies, only to have them defend their actions by saying they are entertainers, not journalists, a maneuver they learned from Rush Limbaugh.”

[RWC] Note Ms. Hovanec doesn’t detail “their lies.”  If there are so many lies, why not provide just one example?  Based on this and her previous letter, I believe Ms. Hovanec considers anything with which she disagrees to be a lie.

Did you notice Ms, Hovanec didn’t criticize any outlet other than Fox News?

“Their philosophy is simple enough: If you say something often enough, people will start to believe it, no matter how crazy.”

[RWC] Again Ms. Hovanec doesn’t tell us what is “crazy.”

“Some of us remember the days of Walter Cronkite.  We turned on the news and never for a split second did we question the validity of what he reported.  His legacy is ‘the most trusted man in America.’”

[RWC] Mr. Cronkite’s legacy was “‘the most trusted man in America,’” not is.  We now know Mr. Cronkite’s reporting was no more unbiased than any other so-called “reporter.”  For example, why did Mr. Cronkite report the Tet Offensive as a North Vietnamese/Vietcong victory when it was really a huge military defeat if he didn’t have an agenda?

“It’s obvious these representatives on Fox News aren’t concerned about their legacy but rather their paychecks.  Glenn Beck makes $13 million a year.  Now that’s entertainment.”

[RWC] Gee, I wonder why Ms. Hovanec isn’t complaining about the $15 million/year paid to Katie Couric (CBS), Diane Sawyer (ABC -$12-$15 million/year), and others not on FNC.

“Where is a good lawyer when you need one?”

[RWC] Just hire one Ms. Hovanec.
