Go after the incompetents; Edward J. Hum; Beaver County Times; June 22, 2006.

If you recall, most of his letters try to convince us Mr. Hum is a Republican.  Given this is at least the 12th anti-Bush/anti-Republican letter from Mr. Hum since July 2004, how dumb does he think we are?

Before I begin, I have a “told you so.”  Mr. Hum led off his letter from September 2005 with, “Fellow Republicans, this is my last letter about George W. Bush.”  I responded with, “Anyone taking bets?”  This is Mr. Hum’s fourth anti-Bush letter since his September promise.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“So, the Democrats can’t figure out how to run against President Bush.”

[RWC] Maybe that’s because President Bush isn’t up for election.

“Let this Republican help.  If Bush honestly thought Iraq was a threat, it was his duty to invade.”

[RWC] I’m as much a Democrat as Mr. Hum is a Republican.

“However, we have had three years of incompetence.  Instead of Iraqi oil paying for the war, we are now up to $400 billion ourselves.  Casualties, including coalition and Iraqis, are heading for 8,000 killed, 50,000 wounded.  Civilians - who knows.”

[RWC] Is Mr. Hum implying the Iraq War would have been OK as long as it was paid for by “Iraqi oil?”  Regarding casualties, it appears Mr. Hum believes there’s some level that defines success or failure.

“The cost of this mission, when accomplished, will be in the trillions.  Don’t forget, Bush can’t cut the VA budget now.  A war of this magnitude with no tax increase, except for our grandchildren, and no civilian sacrifice is immoral.”

[RWC] All of President Bush’s budgets have increased VA funding.

Where is it written tax increases must accompany all wars, and why is no tax increase “immoral?”

Where does Mr. Hum get the idea there is “no civilian sacrifice?”  Everyone in the military was a civilian who volunteered.

“I know.  Like the Canadians, we are fighting them over there so we don’t have to fight them in Toronto.  If the Democrats can’t figure out how to point out the mistakes of these swaggering incompetents, we need a third party.”

[RWC] Doesn’t Mr. Hum pay attention?  Democrats continuously tell us what they believe to be all the “mistakes” regarding Iraq.
