The cost of staying in Iraq; Edward J. Hum; Beaver County Times; September 24, 2006.

Mr. Hum led off his letter from September 2005 with, “Fellow Republicans, this is my last letter about George W. Bush.”  I responded with, “Anyone taking bets?”  This is Mr. Hum’s eighth anti-Bush letter since his September 2005 promise.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Fellow Republicans, Afghanistan is still a mess and Iraq is full of insurgents.  President Bush says the security of America and the future of the war on terror are being decided on the streets of Baghdad.

“This is serious.  Write or call the White House immediately to ask the president to either bring back the draft or raise enlistment bonuses.  We need 12 to 15 new infantry divisions to send to Iraq and the streets of Baghdad.”

[RWC] What is it with liberals?  First they claim President Bush wants a draft, then when it becomes obvious to everyone that’s a lie, the liberals beg for a draft!

Democrats have been trying to pull off this political stunt since January 2003 when they wrote two military draft bills.  When Republicans finally called the Democrat bluff, the House version of the bill was defeated 402-2.  Even the bill’s author, Charles Rangel (D-NY) voted against it.  The only two reps who voted for the bill?  You guessed it, two Democrats, Murtha of Pennsylvania and Stark of California.
