No way to fight a war; Stephen F. Kislock, III; Beaver County Times; May 27, 2007.

Below is a detailed critique of the letter.

“It’s a crime.  The Bush Administration does not support our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Support for our troops must come from Mom, Dad, family and friends.

“I remember getting CARE packages together for the displaced people after World War II, and now it’s our turn to get care packages for our son and daughters over there.”

[RWC] This may come as a shock to Mr. Kislock, but “Mom, Dad, family and friends” have been sending “CARE” packages to men in combat for hundreds of years if not thousands.

“The Bush Administration has spent $427.6 billion of American taxpayers’ money so far.  This war has lasted more than four years, and the invasion and occupation were to be over in less than six months, according to former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

“‘Leave it to Mom and Dad’ must be the motto of the Defense Department.

“Body armor?  Ask Mom and Dad.  Armor for the vehicles?  Go scrounge.  It seems like everything the troops need, the Pentagon does not have.  Why?”

[RWC] If Mr. Kislock didn’t claim his residence is Beaver Falls, I’d think he lives in Antarctica and gets his news via dogsled.  Our military has had body armor for a long time and the issue of “up armoring” Humvees was resolved a long time ago.  If you recall, when the Pentagon realized the demand for armored Humvees was greater than expected, it authorized adding armor as fast as production facilities allowed.

“Having Mom and Dad sending water to the troops in Iraq is the height of incompetence in managing this fiasco.”

[RWC] Have I missed something, or is Mr. Kislock relying on KNN (Kook News Network) again?

“Spending all these billions, and what do we have?  A bankrupt country and the American troops fighting in a civil war.  And for what?”

[RWC] Would someone explain what difference it would make even if what’s going on in Iraq were a civil war?

“Having Mom and Dad back home doing what the Bush administration isn’t doing is no way to fight a war.

“Thank you, Mom and Dad.”
