Intelligent design: pro and con; Richard Klingelhoefer; Beaver County Times; December 30, 2005.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Pro: God created the earth.  Man was given a soul, a conscience and reasoning.

“When, during evolution, did man receive a soul, a conscience, and reasoning?  If you deny that man has a soul or a conscience or reasoning, then all we have are a bunch of apes running around.  A good example was the attorney from the American Civil Liberties Union running down the hall jumping and waving his arms after the judge in Harrisburg, Pa. gave his ruling.

“Con: If you believe in evolution, then you do not believe any of the above.  To believe that man has a soul, conscience or reasoning is confirming that some intelligent happening occurred during evolution to bring this about.

“When you can explain the above, then you can prove Darwin’s evolution theory.”

[RWC] A lot of folks like Mr. Klingelhoefer believe creationism and evolution are mutually exclusive positions.  As I’ve noted in other critiques, that’s not what I learned during my eight years at St. Titus.  Unless I got my lessons wrong, I learned you could believe in creation and evolution.
