Business, not government, creates jobs; Nick Kosanovich, III; Beaver County Times; March 17, 2013.  An editor’s note asserted, “The writer is an eighth-grade pupil at Aliquippa Junior-Senior High.”

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“I do not agree with President Obama’s recommendations for jobs and the economy.

“He intends to increase taxes on the wealthy, which will not help the economy or the issue of creating jobs.  Many wealthy people own their own businesses and are the ones who help to create jobs.  By raising taxes, business owners would have less money to operate their businesses.  If taxes are too high, they can even cause lay offs because businesses may not be able to support existing employees.

“President Obama is attempting to raise the minimum wage to $9 to address the issue of ‘the working poor.’  This will make businesses pay more to their employees.  Although it sounds promising, raising the minimum wage could prevent further job creation.  In addition to limiting job growth, existing positions could be put into jeopardy.  Business owners will then have to balance the employees’ additional payment by possibly laying off current employees.

“These are examples of government involvement.  Throughout history government involvement has proved to be unsuccessful.  Free enterprise has proven to be very successful.  Therefore, free enterprise is the answer to America’s problems concerning the economy.

“When free enterprise was at its strongest, America has done its best.  Thus, our government must tax less, be less involved in employee pay, and let America’s businesses do their work.  Businesses create the jobs, not the government.”

[RWC] This is not a critique of Mr. Kosanovich’s letter; he did a pretty good job and did it without name-calling, personal attacks, lying, et cetera.  Unfortunately, I can’t say the same about most of those who commented on the letter, most of whom are adults who hid behind screen names.  I just hope these folks didn’t accomplish their goal and scare off Mr. Kosanovich.  The purpose of this “critique” is to draw your attention to the comments posted below the letter.  Of the 94 comments at the time I completed this critique, only five were from people who used their real names (two).

I’m going to jump to the conclusion Nick III is the son of Nick Kosanovich, Jr.  If correct, it’s interesting because the elder Kosanovich ran in the 2003 Democrat primary for Beaver County commissioner, and this letter was not written by a current-day Democrat.

For my take on the issues Mr. Kosanovich mentioned, please read my papers entitled “Economics” and “The Minimum Wage.”
