‘Organic meat is a great alternative’; Susan Kraus; Beaver County Times; April 24, 2011.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“‘God loved the birds and invented trees.  Man loved the birds and invented cages.’ - Jacques Deval.

[RWC] Jacques Deval (His real surname was Boularan.) was a French playwright/director.

According to The Bible (Genesis 1:26), “God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image and likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the cattle, over all the wild animals and every creature that crawls on the earth.’”

“The issue of factory farming has been a hot-button topic for some time.”

[RWC] Sure.  You’ll note Ms. Kraus doesn’t provide us with her definition of “factory farming.”

“As a resident of Beaver County, I have eaten at multiple fast food restaurants, like Taco Bell, McDonald’s, and Wendy’s, that all serve meat that comes from factory farms.

“People may know that the treatment of animals in these factories is atrocious, but they are probably unaware of the health effects that factory farm meat can cause for them.”

[RWC] Note the drive-by accusation without supporting evidence.

“The severe selective breeding of factory farmed animals causes them to become more vulnerable to disease.  Ingesting meat that is less than satisfactory can lead to food poisoning and other medical problems.  Simply avoiding restaurants that are known to use factory farm products can reduce the chance of contracting diseases and illnesses.

“Buying organic meat is a great alternative.  If we try to do without fast food as much as possible, we could save animals that are tortured up until their last breaths, when they are then formed into hamburgers so we Americans can enjoy a quick meal.”

[RWC] What about the meat we buy at the grocery store or meat market?  Is it not produced on “factory farms?”

Do your own research, but studies show so-called “organic foods” are no better nutritionally and no more safe than food from Ms. Kraus’ “factory farms.”
