Smokers’ rights violated; Jack Krchmar; Beaver County Times; December 5, 2006.

Below is a detailed critique of the letter.

“Smoke-free state, smoke-free county or smoke-free buildings are all taking the rights of smokers away and making us feel like second-class citizens.”

[RWC] There is no such thing as smoker rights.  The issue is property owner rights.

“This should not be decided by local, state or federal governments.  It should be decided by popular vote.  This would never happen because they couldn’t get smoke free passed.”

[RWC] Mr. Krchmar is wrong again.  A popular vote should not be allowed to take away property rights.

“Why should so few decide for so many?  If state, county or buildings are designated as smoke free, why are they allowed to sell and realize profits from cigarette sales in non-smoking areas?”

[RWC] If representatives want to make government-owned facilities smoke free, that’s OK by me.  My objection is when government prohibits smoking on private property.

“In your home, you can choose to smoke or not.  It should be the same in restaurants, bars or any other business you own.”

[RWC] Mr. Krchmar finally gets it right.  It’s about property rights, not smoker rights.

“Don’t let government take all of our rights.  Give us a choice.”
