Quit talking and enlist; Dave Krupa; Beaver County Times; September 13, 2006.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“A lot has been said lately about our branches of the military not being able to attract enough new recruits.  We all know this is because of the war in Iraq.”

[RWC] As you will read below, this assertion is hogwash.

“I think I have a partial solution to the problem: What if all of the politicians who strongly support the war have at least one member of each of their families join the military?

“President George W. Bush’s twin daughters could join the Army infantry.  Vice President Dick Cheney’s daughter could enlist in the Marine Corps.

“U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum and U. S. Rep. Melissa Hart could have members of their respective families join the Air Force or the Navy.

“And, what about those conservative talk-show hosts who try to make you feel un-American if you oppose the Iraq war?  They could join in on the fun, too.  I’m sure that Ann Coulter, Sean Harrity [sic], Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Rielly [sic] all have a close relative eligible for military service.

“I did my time in the Army; why can’t some of these people?

“The above-mentioned people could gain a lot of respect by strongly supporting the war while having a loved one in harm’s way.

“Why do a lot of conservatives believe that someone else should do their dirty work?”

[RWC] Rather than repeat myself, please see my critique of an equally impressive letter from Nikola Drobac.

Here’s updated recruiting data.  As of August 31st, the active duty services have met their recruiting goals for 15 consecutive months.  The Army and Marine Corps, the branches with the vast majority of “boots on the ground,” were at 104% and 102%, respectively, of their goals with one month left in the fiscal year.
