‘Don’t give up; speak up’; Lorraine Mahany; Beaver County Times; August 28, 2005.

I suspect Ms. Mahany is a socialist at heart, yet doesn’t see heavy reliance government is at the root of many of the problems she cites below.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Are we waiting for God to punish the ‘evildoers’?

“If that is the case, we better be prepared to suffer the heat. We are responsible.  We aren’t endowed with a freedom from responsibility.  If your school board continues with plans to build a new school after you have voted ‘no,’ why aren’t you protesting, showing up at meetings, demanding special meetings?

“If our state lawmakers vote for increases in salary that they’re not entitled to, why do we not demand a satisfactory resolution now?  We can’t afford 16 months of unlawful appropriation and program cutting.  How long do you think your local volunteer fire department will be around for your protection with no money?”

[RWC] Why should local fire departments receive any funding from the commonwealth?  We local residents should pay for our fire protection.

“If we continue our apathetic ways, our lives will be much worse than they are now.

“Who will help us?  Who would be willing to represent the common people in community matters, to create a relationship of trust that could continue at the state or federal level of representation?”

[RWC] Why does anyone have to help us?  Are we unable to address our own problems?

“Candidates backed by big money machines are not good sources for fair representation, nor are millionaires who can afford to buy media time to say nothing.

“Our president continues to spend money we don’t have, demands impossible actions from other nations, makes meaningless threats to the world and lies to us every time he opens his mouth.  We can’t afford another three years of him either.  Don’t give up; speak up.”

[RWC] You undoubtedly noted Ms. Mahany didn’t provide any examples of “impossible actions,” “meaningless threats to the world,” and/or “lies to us every time he [President Bush] opens his mouth.”

I hate to break the news to Ms. Mahany, but merely speaking up doesn’t get it done.  You need action.
