No concern for the past; Diana Marinucci; Beaver County Times; October 22, 2006.

This letter makes no sense.

Below is a detailed critique of the letter.

“Where is our sense of history and good common sense?

“I live in West Aliquippa, and every day I see developer Charles Betters’ heavy equipment digging up the most beautiful riverfront in all of Beaver County.

“Not one nugget of pride in the history of this area is ever thought about.  Does he know that composer Henry Mancini was inspired to write the musical score to ‘Moon River’ because of the view from West Aliquippa caught his imagination and stayed with him as his childhood muse?

“I doubt if the commissioners have good common sense.  If they can’t see the value they have in West Aliquippa, then it goes with the shortsightedness that sold this gem down the river to J&L Steel.

“Now, the famous-to-be Beaver County Juvenile Detention Center could once again block the view.”

[RWC] J&L was there long before Henry Mancini’s birth in 1924, so if he could see “Moon River” with J&L there, why would a juvenile detention center be worse?  Further, our current detention center’s (Allencrest) capacity is about 30 beds, so we can’t be talking about a big replacement facility.

“It also would end all chances of bringing back some federal and state money to really build up this area by building a bridge that connects West Aliquippa to Route 65, not to mention saving the county money by reducing all the cost and wear and tear on sheriff’s vehicles, the cost of gasoline and the time spent hauling prisoners and juveniles to the Beaver County Courthouse in Beaver.”

[RWC] Let me get this straight.  A juvenile detention center will allegedly block a view, but a hulking bridge with all of its raised approaches won’t?

Further, Ms. Marinucci says the bridge would help “really build up this area.”  Doesn’t that run counter to Ms. Marinucci’s goal not to “once again block the view?”  Does Ms. Marinucci expect the development to happen underground?

Finally, there is no such thing as “federal and state money.”  It all comes out of our paychecks, pension checks, et cetera.

“I think we should all thank West Aliquippa resident and Aliquippa Mayor Anthony Battalini for fighting for this area.

“I thank God that at least he has more good common sense and sense of history than many people in this area do.”

[RWC] Note Ms. Marinucci didn’t tell us specifically what Mr. Battalini has allegedly done.
