County should dump private firm; Debi McCreary; Beaver County Times; February 16, 2010.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“I would like to know if Beaver County taxpayers are getting a return from our tax dollars that we are paying for a management company to oversee Friendship Ridge.

“The county is paying in excess of $450,000 a year of our tax dollars and it increases monthly.  Are our tax dollars being used wisely or would it be more cost effective to hire an administrator and financial officer for half the cost of the management firm?”

[RWC] I don’t know anything about this (including Ms. McCreary’s “in excess of $450,000 a year” claim), but why does Ms. McCreary believe two government employees could do the same job as the “management firm” “for half the cost?”  Ms. McCreary would have done herself and us a service if she had provided supporting data.

“As the contract for this company is coming up for renewal at the end of the year, our county commissioners need to examine just what are we getting for this expense.  Can they justify spending that much money when everyone else has to tighten their belts?”

[RWC] I’d like to know more about why Ms. McCreary wrote this letter.  There’s a good chance I’m wrong, but something I can’t put my finger on suggests to me the primary motive was not concern for “a return from our tax dollars.”
