Wind turbines are a form of litter; Edith McKissic; Beaver County Times; September 23, 2009.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“In regard to a public hearing regarding the construction of wind turbines in Bell Acres:”

[RWC] The proposal is for three 60-foot wind turbines, not the 200-foot plus wind turbines typically used for commercial generation.

“My comment is a big ‘no’ for the energy center.  It is discouraging enough to drive along our roads and have to see all the litter.  People seem to think this is the place to throw cans, bottles, paper, etc.

“Now, they want us to look at turbines blowing in the wind.

“I, for one, would rather see trees, flowers, animals and birds.  In other words, scenery.  No turbines.

“We have three rivers in this area that can generate electricity.  We don’t need turbines.  They’re just another form of litter.  They’re eyesores.”

[RWC] The Ohio is a shallow river, with a maximum depth of about 30 ft. until after Cincinnati.  The Ohio has a maximum depth of about 170 ft. around Louisville, but it gradually drops to about 20 ft. once it gets near the Mississippi.  In any case, the combination of depth and flow isn’t enough to get serious power.  The Allegheny, Beaver, and Monongahela rivers have the same challenges.
