Leave Arabs, Israelis alone; Jerry Miskulin; Beaver County Times; August 16, 2006.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Invading Iraq was a rude awakening to many people who thought the Iraqis would welcome us as liberators.  That turned out to be a mirage.”

[RWC] The idea that anyone thought beforehand that “the Iraqis would welcome us as liberators” is a myth conjured up after the fact.  Oh, by the way, a lot of Iraqis did “welcome us as liberators,” just not enough.

“After years of siphoning off Arab oil, the administration should have sensed the resentment in the Arab world and met it head on instead of trying an end-around for Iraq’s oil.”

[RWC] “[S]iphoning off Arab oil?”  Earth to Mr. Miskulin.  Since when is paying for a commodity referred to as “siphoning off?”  Lest we forget, the Arab oil-producing countries are fabulously wealthy as a result of Mr. Miskulin’s alleged “siphoning off Arab oil.”

Second, we have the tired old “war for oil” talking point.  Come on, Mr. Miskulin, give us something you can support with credible evidence instead of repeating what you read/heard somewhere.

“Peace doesn’t bring much to the Arab world but the loss of face, and that same old bitter taste.

“For the Israelis and Arabs to come together, we must not interfere.  We must let them strike their own accords.  What can we give them when we’ve been giving it to them all these years?”

[RWC] Huh?
