Daniel J. Morrison – 11/30/05

We can’t afford GOP anymore; Daniel J. Morrison; Beaver County Times; November 30, 2005.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Trickle-down effect.  Remember that line?

“With 30,000 more Americans put on waivers from General Motors, I don’t think we can take much more of that trickle-down effect.

“I’m sure many young people never heard that line.  But it’s my hope that they do their homework and be prepared to vote in 2006.”

[RWC] Though Mr. Morrison apparently heard of the so-called “trickle-down effect,” he doesn’t seem to know what it means.  In general, the term means that a strong economy benefits everyone.  Even in a strong economy, however, poorly run businesses will tend to fail.  If Mr. Morrison had told us what he would do, I can almost guarantee his choices would slow our economy.

“I don’t think younger folks are going to be happy when, who knows how much their taxes will be.  The rich will continue investing in China, due to cheap labor and no pesky EPA or unions to deal with.  If you think this is all right, think again.

“China is already a world power and Communist country, yet we grant them free trade and, to make matters worse, the United States borrows enormous sums from China.  And if you think things are warm and fuzzy between us and China, think again.  China’s sales of nuclear weapons technology to aspiring nuclear powers.  That didn’t go over too well.

“On April 25, 2001, President George W. Bush, in an interview on Good Morning America, said that the United States would use whatever means necessary to defend Taiwan against a military attack by China.

“Any way you slice it, a confrontation with China is scary.

“This is what China brings to the table:

“An army of 1.9 million men, 14,000 tanks, 14,500 artillery pieces and 453 helicopters, 250,000 sailors, 63 submarines, 18 destroyers, 35 frigates, and a total of 2,350 nuclear warheads.  Among the 2,350 warheads are about 550 tactical nukes and 1,800 strategic nukes.”

[RWC] Since when did liberals worry about Red China or any other communist country?  You’ll note Mr. Morrison used the politically correct “China” instead of “Red China.”  Liberals opposed Reagan’s policy toward the USSR and our support for anti-communist groups in Central America.  Let’s not forget North Vietnam.  Liberals also look favorably on Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez.

“Maybe those 30,000 GM workers would not have gotten terminated if Pennsylvania’s biggest employer paid a living wage.”

[RWC] The #1 and #2 biggest employers in PA are the federal and state governments, respectively.  I’m sure Mr. Morrison meant Wal-Mart, but Wal-Mart is #3 as reported by the Commonwealth on September 20, 2005.

“Then they could have bought GM cars and trucks.”

[RWC] If people can afford to buy BMWs, Hondas, Hyundais, Mercedes, and Toyotas manufactured in the U.S., why can’t they afford comparable GM products, Mr. Morrison?

“We and our children cannot afford a Republican-controlled Senate and House any more.”

[RWC] In case Mr. Morrison missed it, GM has been closing plants and cutting employees for the better part of 30 years, long before Republicans gained “control” of both houses in 1994.
