Segway a welcome addition for police; John Paul; Beaver County Times; April 22, 2009.

Below is a detailed critique of the letter.

“Three cheers to the Beaver Police Department for not only being proactive, not only taking the time to get grant money but for also helping to shape the town of Beaver as a progressive community.”

[RWC] You can find more info in the story “Beaver police to buy Segway, ATV with state grant.”

“As a business owner, I know how important it is for a town to demonstrate its commitment to public safety, and Segway patrols will be a very visible means to achieve that goal.”

[RWC] A walking policeman doesn’t do that?

“As someone who owns a Segway, I can attest to the device’s ability to enhance an officer’s patrols in a remarkably safe and efficient manner (more so, I would say, than even a bicycle).

“The men and women of the department are the cornerstone of our town’s ability to maintain a thriving business district and safe residential neighborhoods.

“In addition to the acquisition of the Segway, the department has added a K9 officer to the force, has an informative new website and sponsors the Citizen’s Police Academy.”

[RWC] I don’t care if Beaver wants a Segway (and an ATV) or not, but why should anyone other than Beaver taxpayers pay for them?
