Bush is the real enemy; Gwendolyn Pharr; Beaver County Times; October 21, 2004.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“I read the paper daily, listen to the current events on TV and it really disturbs me the way our country is headed.”

[RWC] If Ms. Pharr’s news sources include the Times, Post-Gazette, ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, and PBS but exclude sources like the Tribune-Review and Fox News Channel, I can see how Ms. Pharr comes to her conclusions.

“It’s a shame that so many of our men and women have been killed because of a senseless war.  No WMDs were found or proof that Iraq was the enemy.”

[RWC] No proof Iraq was the enemy?  Iraq was an enemy since at least 1990 when it invaded Kuwait.  Iraq tried to assassinate former President Bush, shot at U.S. warplanes enforcing the no-fly zones, violated the United Nations sanctions, ignored countless United Nations resolutions, et cetera.  Did President Clinton use bombs and cruise missiles against Iraq during the 1990s just for grins?

“The real enemy is George Bush.  He had no plan in going into this war, and still has no plan of bringing our soldiers home alive.  This war was to be over after Saddam was found.”

[RWC] Between Saddam Hussein and President Bush, President Bush is “the real enemy?”  I feel sorry for Ms. Pharr.

“He is sending more troops to Iraq for what?

“Bush has no sensible direction and has led this country in no sound peaceable direction.

“Health care is up, gas prices are up, many have lost health-care insurance, jobs are lost, many jobs are in foreign countries, not here in the USA.”

[RWC] More talking points.  No president controls the price of healthcare or energy.  More Americans are working now than at any time in history and Bureau of Labor Statistics data for the first quarter for 2004 suggest outsourcing accounted for only about 2.5% of jobs “lost.”  Remember, our economy constantly “loses” and “gains” jobs, but the net result has been an increase of jobs.

“In his time in office, anyone with a sound mind and eyes wide open can see that he has not been honest and hasn’t done anything to help the American people.”

[RWC] Please provide examples, Ms. Pharr.

“If he’s re-elected for four more years, I would want to leave here and move to Canada.”

[RWC] How many liberals said they’d leave the United States if George Bush won in 2000?  Unfortunately, none of them kept their word.

“He’ll make a better president in Iraq, he’s given them enough money to rebuild destroy and rebuild over and over again that country.

[RWC] Is Ms. Pharr serious?  To do what Ms. Pharr claims would cost trillions of dollars.  Through the end of September 2004 we spent approximately $120 billion.  That’s serious money, but nothing like Ms. Pharr claims.

“This president has put a new meaning to ‘the world is coming to an end.’

“If he’s re-elected, this country is doomed.”

[RWC] Yeah, right.
