Joe Reynolds – 10/10/06

Swann for governor; Joe Reynolds; Beaver County Times; October 10, 2006.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“For the people of Pennsylvania who think Ed Rendell is doing a good job, consider this: The average family of four in Pennsylvania is today paying $2,700 more in taxes than just four years ago.  And while Rendell was reducing other people’s pay, he found time to sign a pay increase for himself, his Cabinet and the legislators.”

[RWC] Mr. Reynolds failed to note Mr. Swann cozied up to the Republican leaders in the General Assembly who – along with Democrat leaders – pushed through the payjacking.

“Pennsylvania companies pay some of the highest business taxes in the country.  Pennsylvania is one of only nine states that still impose an inheritance tax on its citizens.

“In 2002, when Rendell won the election, he said he would cut property taxes by 30 percent for every homeowner.  Have your taxes gone down?  He has failed to deliver on his promises.  The time has come for a new governor: Lynn Swann on Nov. 7.

“As governor, Swann will reduce the personal income tax to the pre-Rendell rate of 2.8 percent and phase out the inheritance tax.  His plan will reduce school property taxes for every state homeowner.

“Swann understands that tax cuts have always stimulated economic growth, created jobs and increased government’s own revenue.  The opposite is also true.  Higher taxes discourage growth, undermine job creation, and ultimately diminish the tax base and government revenues.

“Rendell governs as a tax-and-spend liberal.  It’s time for a change.

“I believe Lynn Swann as governor will make a better Pennsylvania for our people.  We have a great privilege in this country to go to the voting booth and install leaders who will make our lives better.  Now is our chance.”

[RWC] Don’t get me wrong.  Mr. Swann would likely be better for PA than Mr. Rendell and I’ll vote for Mr. Swann.

That said, why should we believe Mr. Swann – or any Republican for that matter – would make a huge difference as governor?

Mr. Reynolds bashes Mr. Rendell, but fails to acknowledge GA Republicans acquiesced to most of what Mr. Rendell asked for.  Remember, Republicans are a majority in both houses of the GA.  Republicans could have killed the tax and spending increases, but did not.

Mr. Reynolds also fails to note many of his complaints existed during the Republican Ridge/Schweiker administration.
