‘Not by faith alone’; Jewel Robertson; Beaver County Times; January 26, 2005.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“It seems that President Bush is launching out again on his faith.

“Religion in [sic] a very intricate part of our culture, as much as apple pie.  Some people use religion whenever it is convenient for them.

“Who can we believe?  There is nothing about the president that would have me believe he lives by faith.  He would have one to believe he has a straight line to God.  His speech writer is religious and that is what he needs.”

[RWC] Ms. Robertson seems hung up on President Bush’s faith.  She has written about President Bush’s faith previously.

“He is being praised for his faith, but I would like to see more about his honesty.  I have heard enough about his faith.  As he enters into his second term he must show the American people his works.”

[RWC] Ms. Robertson clearly hasn’t been paying attention to the news.  Though I didn’t agree with all of them, President Bush’s works are widely known.

“The definition of faith is: ‘unquestioning belief, specif. in God; religion, etc; loyalty - good (or bad) faith (in)sincerity, (dis)honest.’

“How do we know we can trust him since he lied about the weapons of mass destruction?  He won’t admit to the mistake he made by going into Iraq.”

[RWC] How many times do we need to go over this?  There is no evidence President Bush lied about WMD in Iraq.  The only way you can make that claim is if you believe President Bush was the only leader in the world who knew there were no WMD in Iraq.  Despite the refusal of some allies to join us in Iraq, they and the UN Security Council unanimously agreed Iraq had unaccounted for WMD.  To date, every investigation of the issue reported that President Bush and other decision makers drew logical conclusions from the information presented by the world’s intelligence agencies.

“In conclusion, I will go to James 2:18-20: ‘Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy works and I will show thee my faith by my works.  Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well; the devils also believe and tremble.  But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?’

“It is by works that a man is justified and not by faith only.”

[RWC] Who claims otherwise?
