Watch what Bush does; Jewel Robertson; Beaver County Times; January 27, 2005.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“It took a few days for me to digest President Bush’s inaugural speech.

“I can’t believe we have a president who won’t address any issues that are facing our country.  He’s talking about freedom somewhere else other than in America.”

[RWC] Ms. Robertson must be confusing an inauguration speech with a state of the union speech.

Regarding her second sentence, does Ms. Robertson believe we don’t have freedom in the United States?

“I should not have been surprised because he was not elected on his performance of the past four years but on some moral issues that had nothing to do with what really matters.”

[RWC] Sorry, Ms. Robertson, President Bush was reelected because of his performance and his character.  Many liberals take Ms. Robertson’s position because they don’t want to face the truth.  They got their message out and a majority of voters didn’t like it and/or their candidate.

“It is not that some of the issues should not be addressed, but health care, jobs and prescription drugs should come first.  Morals should be taught in the home.  The government is no place for teaching them.”

[RWC] In case Ms. Robertson missed it, President Bush did address these issues in his first term.  I never heard President Bush claim morals should be taught by the government.

“Bush had to tell Jenna (his daughter) to put her makeup away while they were in church.  If she had been taught morals, this would never have happened.  After all, she is not a kid; she is a grown woman.”

[RWC] I did a quick Google search and found no mention of this incident.  It’s possible Ms. Robertson is referring to another locale.  While watching the inauguration coverage, I saw a shot of President Bush and his daughters seated in the parade-reviewing stand.  One of his daughters was putting something on her lips.  I couldn’t read lips, but it appeared that when President Bush saw a camera focused on them, he mentioned it to his daughter.  She then put away whatever she was putting on her lips.  In any case, they were not in a church at the time.

“He did not mention the war in Iraq, nor did he mention Social Security.  To put his faith thing to an end, we should see it in what he does and not what he talks about.”

[RWC] Why should President Bush have mentioned Socialist Security?  After all, aren’t Democrats telling us there is nothing wrong with it?

Seriously, though, Ms. Robertson and other partisans tend to forget the inauguration address is part of a celebration.  It was also a fairly short speech, only about 20 minutes.  How many points did Ms. Robertson expect President Bush cover?  As I noted above, topics like those mentioned by Ms. Robertson are usually dealt with in speeches like the state of the union address.  President Bush will deliver a state of the union address to Congress on February 2nd.

“A tree is known by the fruit it bears.  So far, his tree is good for nothing but to be cut down.”

[RWC] 60+ million voters thought otherwise.
