Jewel Robertson – 9/26/16

Poet Langston Hughes’ words are relevant today; Jewel Robertson; Beaver County Times; September 26, 2016.

Until January 2007, Ms. Robertson’s (JR) letters (here, here, here, and here) focused on bashing President Bush.  In her first letter, Ms. Robertson opined that President Bush could be listening to Satan.  That tells us much of what we need to know about Ms. Robertson.  Since January 2007, race has been a regular feature of her letters, though Ms. Robertson reverted to Bush bashing in “‘No one can be as bad as Bush was’.”  As I wrote about another serial Bush-basher, I guess some addictions are too tough to overcome.  More recent Robertson letters I critiqued were “America’s time has come to repent of its sins,” “Enough with disrespect,” “Reagan hurt veterans,” “Boils down to hate,” and “Attacks on president disrespectful.”

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“All of my life I have had to listen to how the race problem is going to be solved and I am tired of it.”

[RWC] As you read JR’s letter, think of someone she doesn’t mention.

“Langston Hughes wrote a poem 81 years ago, ‘Let America be America Again.’  The poem talks of a day when America can be what it was intended to be -- a true democracy, with freedom, equality, and justice for all.”

[RWC] America is and was intended to be a republic, not “a true democracy.”  “A true democracy” results in tyranny by the majority.

Federalist #10 gives James Madison’s distinction between “a pure democracy” and “a republic.”  Mr. Madison was our fourth President and is often referred to as the “Father of the Constitution.”

“John Kerry used that in his campaign when he ran against George Bush.  It is not new.  Hughes published the poem in 1936.  We see that Donald Trump is a copycat, also.  There is nothing new under the sun.”

[RWC] The Kerry campaign slogan was indeed, “Let America be America Again.”

The Trump (DT) campaign slogan is “Make America Great Again” (MAGA).

JR failed to mention Bill Clinton used MAGA during his 1992 campaign and 16 years later in an ad for Hillary Clinton’s (HRC) 2008 campaign.

“Now Trump claims to want to rescue the African-Americans, which is a lie.  Do not believe him.  He only wants to get elected.”

[RWC] DT said, “What the hell do you have to lose?  Give me a chance.”

The Democrat party, home of the KKK, Jim Crow laws, and so on, has for decades promised “to rescue the African-Americans.”  As a result, FactCheck.org reports, “No Republican presidential candidate has gotten more than 15% of the black vote since” 1965.  Since 1936 (28%), the most a Republican presidential candidate has gotten was 39% in 1956 for incumbent President Dwight Eisenhower.  Democrats don’t worry about keeping their bogus promises to black voters because they know they’ll get 80% to 90% of black voters no matter what.  How’s that working for you, JR?

“Hughes said in his poetry that the poor whites, the negro slaves and the Indian who was run from his land were not free.  There was always someone over them.  The American Dream was never within their reach.”

[RWC] “The American Dream was never within their reach?”  Among many, many others, I think Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and Ben Carson, MD, would disagree.

I thought use of the terms “negro” and “Indian” was politically incorrect at best.

“I say that what is happening now is modern day lynching.  They got away before but now they are being held accountable.”

[RWC] What is JR writing about?

You probably noticed JR didn’t mention President Barack Obama (BHO).  Why didn’t BHO “rescue the African-Americans?”
