Go after good-paying jobs; Rose Ruddick; Beaver County Times; April 20, 2005.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“I disagree with Commissioner Charlie Camp’s assessment of why we are losing population in Beaver County.  There are many births on a daily basis in the county that should compensate for a lot of the death rate.

“We can increase population and stop people from leaving simply by having good-paying jobs in the county.  You get these and people will come and live here, and the ones already here will be able to stay.

“We desperately need industry and an industrial park that would accommodate corporate needs such as you find in Cranberry and Robinson townships.

“You cannot raise taxes to meet our county needs when incomes are going down and we are losing population due to lack of good jobs.  The more people make, the better the tax revenue.

“But without jobs, what happens when the population goes down again and again?  Raise taxes more and more on the ones who are left.”

[RWC] This is a “duh” letter.  Did you note Ms. Ruddick made no suggestions about how to accomplish this goal?  That said, I suspect Ms. Ruddick believes a government-directed economy is the cure.
