In state college tuition; Dan Sainovich; Beaver County Times; April 19, 2006.

In his previous letter, Mr. Sainovich told us what a great guy State Rep. Mike Veon (D-14) is.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Letter writer Jim Thomas (‘No in-state tuition for illegals,’ Wednesday) writes that Christian leaders and American families have spent generations building these colleges and universities.  He uses this theory to deny allowing illegal aliens to pay in-state tuition.”

[RWC] The in-state tuition for state colleges thing is a bit of a diversion.  Whether an illegal alien gets in-state tuition or not, U.S. citizens and other legal residents end up subsidizing the illegal’s tuition.  Granting an illegal alien in-state tuition simply adds insult to injury.

“I hope that he is not speaking on behalf of all Christian leaders and American families.  I cannot speak on behalf of Christian leaders, but I do believe that most Christian leaders believe in helping their fellow human beings have a better way of life is a good thing.”

[RWC] I can’t speak for Christians either, but let me ask a question.  Does Christianity – or did Christ – teach that criminal behavior by criminals should be rewarded?  If so, why not disband our police departments and dissolve our courts?  For that matter, why have laws at all?

“As for American family values, I am a member of an American family and believe in helping or aiding aliens.”

[RWC] Note that Mr. Sainovich dropped the “illegal” from “illegal aliens” in an effort to conflate illegal aliens with legal immigrants.  For whatever reason, Mr. Sainovich wants us to believe opposition to illegal aliens is the same as opposing legal immigrants.

“This piece of legislation is to change the law to make it lawful for this to happen.  Education is a very important way to enable people/families to improve their quality of life.  This piece of legislation is a way of decriminalizing aliens.  If Thomas wants to argue law, right or wrong, that is OK, that is his prerogative.  But to justify denying the opportunity for affordable education to a group of people who can least afford it is completely wrong.”

[RWC] “This piece of legislation is a way of decriminalizing aliens.”  Not exactly.  The legislation wants to decriminalize ILLEGAL aliens.  It is called amnesty and rewards criminals for breaking U.S. law on a continuing basis.

Mr. Sainovich says illegal aliens should be provided with a benefit (in-state tuition) not available to out of state U.S. citizens and legal immigrants.  How can that make sense to anyone?

Using Mr. Sainovich’s logic, we should not prosecute thieves when they are “people who can least afford it.”

“I support the legislation and its intent to help people improve their lives along with their families.”

[RWC] The intent of the Senate Judiciary Committee bill is not “to help people improve their lives along with their families.”  The intent is to buy votes.
