Drill for more domestic oil; Dennis Scheib; Beaver County Times; May 30, 2008.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Wake up, America!  We are the most powerful country on this planet, yet we let the small, oil-rich countries dictate to us.

“It is time we become more independent and start drilling in Alaska, off our coast, out West — whatever it takes.  In this day and age, I’m sure we can drill for oil and protect the environment.

[RWC] We’ve been drilling for oil and protecting the environment for decades all over the world.  There’s a reason we don’t read disaster stories about oil production in Alaska, the U.S. Gulf, et cetera.  If you recall, despite all the fury of the 2005 hurricane season, none of the thousands of oil producing platforms in the U.S. Gulf had a spill even though many incurred major damage.

Alleged concerns about the environment are simply red herrings.  Economic, political, and social ideologies are at the bottom of the issue.

“I am an avid outdoors person and don’t want to see destruction of our natural resources.  However, these other countries are killing us economically, not with bombs or terrorism.

“Yet our great politicians are doing nothing to help hard-working Americans to live somewhat a normal existence.  These countries are using billions of dollars of our money to become richer and stronger, and someday they will probably turn on us.  Call your elected officials and voice your concern now.”
