Levi Schneider – 5/18/10

Another example of misplaced spending; Levi Schneider; Beaver County Times; May 18, 2010.

The title doesn’t seem consistent with the central position of the letter.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“In response to the May 9 article ‘Get the lead out:’”

[RWC] I didn’t see the article and it’s not on the Times website.

“I believe that a fund to help lower-income families get the lead paint out of their homes is an excellent idea.”

RWC] No, it’s not.  It’s simply another scheme for bureaucrats and politicians to acquire power by robbing from Peter to pay Paul.

“Everyone needs a little help at some point in their lives, and the government is now willing to support that.  The younger generation needs to be protected and brought up in safe homes.  We need to learn to rely on the younger generations for support in the future when we are old.”

RWC] Did you note how Mr. Schneider’s concern for “lower-income families” and the “younger generation” morphed into self-interest in the last sentence?

“It is very nice to see the government willing to spend a significant amount of money on a good cause.  Usually, the government spends all its money on unnecessary things, such as changing state Route 60 to Interstate 376.  The amount of money spent on signage for the new road name could have funded the get-the-lead-out project for years.”

[RWC] Is Mr. Schneider kidding?  We have trillions of dollars of debt because the government is “willing to spend a significant amount of money on” so-called good causes.
